Navistar Engine Diagnostics (NEDS): Install, Activate, Connect, and Start Diagnosing

If you need to diagnose or program International / Navistar engines, NED (Navistar Engine Diagnostics) is the factory tool you’ll use.

What NED Can Do

According to the software capabilities section, NED supports:

This is Navistar’s top-level diagnostic application for engines from MaxxForce, N-Series, N13, N9/N10, A26, and more.

System Requirements (PC)

Windows Vista, 7, or 10 (64-bit recommended)
1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / AMD Athlon X2 or better
2 GB RAM (32-bit) or 4 GB RAM (64-bit)
300 MB free disk space
Internet required for updates
Display: 1024×768 or better
RP1210A-compatible adapter (J1708/J1939). We recommend the Nexiq USB Link 3.

Install NED

Download the installer. This was provided in the email you received with your registration information.
Run Navistar Engine Diagnostics Setup.exe.
Click Next → Accept the License Agreement → Install.
Check the box Run Navistar Engine Diagnostics → Finish.

Enter Product Key & Register

When NED launches for the first time, enter the product key.
If valid, choose Existing User = Yes or No.
If you’re a new user:
- Complete the registration window.
- Wait for the confirmation email.
- Follow instructions to create your password.
Log in via the User Authentication window.

Firewall Requirements (Critical)

Allow outbound access to:

*.navistar.com
*.internationaldelivers.com
*.amazonaws.com
*.cloudfront.net

If these are blocked, NED will not activate and will stop working after 30 days.

Launching NED

Desktop icon
Start Menu
Right-click → Open

You will always see the User Authentication Window on launch.

Connecting to an Engine

Log into NED.
Connect RP1210 adapter → vehicle → Key ON Engine OFF.
If not auto-selected:
Connection → Select Com Link
Click the COM Link button to start probing.
When connected, the indicator turns green.

NED will identify:

Supported engine (full features)
Unknown engine (DTC-only mode)

Simulation Mode

View parameters, tests, and signals for training without a truck connected.

Menu:
Connection → Select Engine → Simulate Non Connected Engine

Working With DTCs

NED shows:

SPN (Suspect Parameter Number)
FMI (Failure Mode Indicator)
Pre-2010 “DTC number”

Freeze Frame Data

Click Open next to fault.

Clear DTCs

Key ON Engine OFF

Click Clear DTCs.
Select modules (if viewing all).

Snapshots (Recording & Playback)

Use Record Session or Record All
Set sample interval.
Save automatically to the Snapshots folder on desktop.
Playback includes graphs and selectable signals.

Parameters & Programming

Viewing Parameters

Go to:
Sessions → Programming

Access Levels

Levels include: Software, Engineering, Programming, Customer Password, Dealer, Fleet, Available.

Editing & Programming

Click Value.
Enter New Value.
Press Enter.
Click Program Engine.

Customer Password

8-character password → Program Engine.

Exporting Parameters

File → Export Parameters
Recommends VIN + date naming.

Templates

Create templates for PTO settings, road/cruise speeds, shift settings, service intervals.
Load templates and program multiple trucks quickly.
Lock templates.
Templates are .template files.
